Before sheep and wool were established in the highlands, people would wear clothes made from linen and while cheap, it was better suited for climates much further south than the highlands of Scotland. Wool on the other hand is naturally weather-resistant and a great insulator, perfect for the harsh Scottish conditions.

The inaugural Burns Night was held in 1801, five years after his death, by a group of his close friends at the Burns Cottage in Alloway. The evening consisted of various performances and speeches, accompanied by a classic haggis dinner. The first Burns Supper was so well-received that the group decided to make it an annual event, henceforth celebrated each year on Burns' birthday.
